It's almost never listed in manufacturers' specifications, is difficult to measure without appropriate instruments, and its effects on the court are often attributed to other causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the twistweight directly affects one of the most frequent situations in real play: the off-center hit, that is, an impact that does not occur exactly in the center of the stringbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is twistweight?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The twistweight \u2014 also called the polar moment of inertia \u2014 measures the racket\u2019s resistance to rotation around its longitudinal axis, that is, the axis that runs through the racket from the butt cap to the tip of the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the ball hits the stringbed off-center\u2014at 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock, to use the common terminology among customizers\u2014it generates torque that tends to rotate the racquet around this axis. This brings concrete advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>less power loss on off-center hits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>greater consistency in the direction of the shot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a sweet spot perceived as larger and more tolerant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A low twistweight, on the other hand, makes the racket more sensitive to the impact position: central hits are precise and effective, but off-center impacts produce a more marked rotation of the frame, resulting in a loss of control and energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twistweight is primarily determined by the weight distribution on the sides of the oval\u2014the weights at 3 and 9 o'clock contribute directly to this parameter. The inertia around this axis is measured, which corresponds to the traditional swingweight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Second measure \u2013 the spinweight.<\/strong>&nbsp;The racket is rotated 90\u00b0 in the cradle so that the string bed is parallel to the ground. The inertia is measured around the same axis under the same conditions. This value is called spinweight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Calculation of twistweight.<\/strong>&nbsp;Applying the perpendicular axes theorem, the twistweight is obtained as the difference between the two measured values:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Twistweight = Spinweight \u2212 Swingweight<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The perpendicular axis theorem states that, for a planar body (thin plate), the moment of inertia about an axis perpendicular to the plane is equal to the sum of the moments of inertia about two mutually perpendicular axes lying in the plane. The racket is not exactly a body that can be considered planar with negligible thickness compared to its other dimensions, so the method constitutes an approximation. In practice, for the typical geometry of a tennis racket frame, the approximation is sufficiently accurate for sporting and customisation use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Calculating twistweight with Inertia X1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inertia X1 implements this method in its app. After performing a standard swingweight measurement with the stringbed in a vertical position, the user rotates the racquet 90\u00b0 in the cradle\u2014bringing the stringbed to a horizontal position\u2014and performs a second measurement session to detect the spinweight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The app automatically calculates the twistweight as the difference between the two values \u200b\u200band returns it along with the spinweight session repeatability statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a complete picture of the frame\u2019s inertial properties \u2014 swingweight, spinweight, and twistweight \u2014 obtained with the same measurement procedure and the same reliability guaranteed by the individual testing of each instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Twistweight and customization<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing a racquet's twistweight opens up concrete possibilities for customizing the frame. You can increase it specifically by adding weight to the sides of the head, at 3 and 9 o'clock, and test the effect with a new measurement before hitting the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach\u2014modify, measure, evaluate\u2014is exactly how expert customizers and professional players' racket fitters work.
